Excellent storytelling. I think this book should be required reading for every student. MDT, beautifully describes the surroundings and the experiences in such a way that I am fully immersed into the story. I appreciate the realness of the black characters and their POV. So heartbreaking, yet hopeful and funny.

I really liked this book. I thought the plot moved along very well and I was never confused. The author did a very good job of capturing the life of a black family in the 1930s.
