Who could have known that a book about a guy on a one-way su*cide mission to save his dying planet, far, far away from Earth, could be one of the most heartwarming stories ever? Not me.

I’m star-struck. I’m in awe. This book is possibly one of the most heartwarming books I’ve ever read. It was quite difficult to get through at first, but once it hit, oh boi…I couldn’t put it down. The physics, the science and all the complicated stuff, I have no idea how accurate it was. Heck, this book is my first Science fiction, I hate science, how am I supposed to know? Most of the time, I just skimmed through smart-people part just because I knew for the fact that I wouldn’t be able to understand it anyway. But apart from that, this book is pure magic, magic in every single way. The plot was as simple as that. Ryland woke up on a spaceship, lost his memories, his crew all ded, had no idea where he was or even who he was. And as he regained his memories, he found out that he was humanity’s only hope. And no, no, even if he did manage to save the world, he didn’t get to go back. This trip to the space was a one-way trip. That doesn’t sound one bit heartwarming right? Ye. The heartwarming bit? All thanks to the ‘alien’ friend he found shortly after he woke up from a coma.(planned, so he didn’r have to stay awake when they traveled to the destination.)

Ryland was an amazing character. I liked him immediately and I loved the fact that he was previously a teacher. It’s not often that we come across a male character like him. Maybe because he was a teacher, he just radiated this warm and kind feeling that was just so soothing and comfortable to read about. (I rarely read any book, if not at all, written by men all purely because of how much toxic-masculinity and male-gaze I have to go through. So the fact that I loved Ryland with all my heart says a lot.) But of course, the star of the book just has to be Rocky, Ryland’s alien friend who was there to find the solution to save his people from extinction from the same problem. I just can’t stress enough how adorable he was. He was a joy to read and I just looked forward to more and more of him every page. How they communicated, how they worked together, how their friendship formed little by little, even if they weren’t even from the same solar system. Heck, I mean they couldn’t even survive in each other’s atmosphere. But they made me cry. A friendship between a human and a spider-like alien made me cry. And I’m not one bit embarrassed about it. It was beautiful.

The writing threw me off a bit at the beginning. Didn’t like it. It was too casual. Too many “!!” mark. But once I got used to it, damn, it did add a lot to this book. There are so many more I want to talk about this but I had just read half of it in 7 hours and I’m sleepy as hell. So I’m just gonna end this with, read it. Please read it. This book is worth it.

Update : 11/03/24 12.30pm just finished listening to the audiobook. It was AMAZING. Wahhhh

HOLY COW THIS WAS SO GOOD! GOOD GOOD GOOD! *jazz hands*

I loved The Martian by Andy Weir, so I was fairly confident that I would enjoy Project Hail Mary, too. I honestly love PHM so much more! The story was so engaging and fast-paced, and our MC, Ryland Grace, is a very likeable and personable dude. The science was very sciency, but still accessible to me, a very un-sciency human. And that's all I'll say to avoid spoilers. But I will say that I highly HIGHLY recommend the audiobook! Ray Porter did a phenomenal job narrating this story. He did excellent accents, and brought the perfect balance of humor and emotional intensity to Grace's voice.

This will 100% be an audio that I will come back to again and again!
