First off, CHOOSE THE BEAR. All of the characters were terrible human beings but I liked the uniqueness of the haunted mansion making people crazy and its tie to what a toxic marriage does to people. It felt way more like a literary fiction with most of the focus on relationships rather than horror. I’d say it’s a great option for primarily fiction or mystery readers if they want something a tad spooky.

The first 75% was a pretty solid domestic thriller with a possible paranormal angle. But then this ridiculously fantastical element just comes out of nowhere. A room in the house literally resurrects the dead as Stepford People, really? It just doesn't work for what to that point been a very grounded real-world setting in which the "haunted house" aspect could plausibly be explained as the main character hallucinating. It's way too out there and just felt like an ass-pull.
