On the Black Hill by Bruce Chatwin is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-October.
This book tells of the un-small occurences in the lives of people who live in a small Welsh village. It's third-person narrated in a cheerful, witty, Dickensian way that's positive, yet sees the tragic underside of things.

Beautifully written and took me through the countryside with a clear vision. The love and pain endured by the brothers was evident through the book.
There's a lot that's good about this book and a lot that's bad. I got a real feel for the place and for the movement of time, and a strong sense of some of the characters. There are some striking incidents.
However, it's hard to ever feel engaged. We don't dwell at any point for long enough. There's an awful lot of telling rather than showing. Even when we get to glimpse a significant, resonant moment, it's either prefaced or finished with a flat statement telling us how to feel about it instead of allowing us our own responses.
