I bumped this up to 4 stars. It is dark and there is a lot about living after rape. I think this time around, knowing how intense this book was beforehand I was able to prepare mentally and enjoy the lighter moments more. It can be hard to get through, but it is also a really sweet book because of the couple and how they work together.
------------
Originally 3 stars
This one is a whole lot darker than the first, but we are warned, so I wasn't shocked. I did like this couple, but again just think this story and atmosphere might be too out there for me. The ending was neat and I am really interested in what happens to their children.

4.7 out of this world stars
I discovered this series from an author that I follow. I am so glad that I did because I am loving it. It's unusual, has great world building, and fantastic characters.

this was full of heartstrings and emotions. Callie made my heart bleed. Being brutalized, in every way, by her captors she is rescued by Zadeon a gladiator. His species is very touchy-feely with their mate going as far as to scent mark them with their tongues. he knows she is his but he is also aware of her being brutalized and that she cannot do the things the mates usually allow/do. I legit cried for her. She wanted too badly to feel safe and not torture Zadeon but at the same time, she was so traumatized she couldn't bring herself to do/accept certain things. It was a situation where no one was at fault so you feel for them both. I legit wanted to hug them both and take away all their pain. Zadeon was a freaking saint. he works to get her trust then to build up her confidence again and lets her vent her anger and terror in a way that suits them both. I doubt she ever truly gets over it but she does move past it allowing herself to love Zadeon and be with him. this is emotional and at times dark. but overall it's a book about overcoming trauma and moving on. a great, emotional, read.

It's sad, let me just say that upfront, but it has a happy ending. A lot of raw emotions and dealing with trauma. It doesn't have as much dynamic plot as other books in the series (like on the run from someone or something more adventurous), but the story feels so real.
Zadeon is just so understanding and honestly would be a great book husband.
