There is a lot going on in this book, but it’s a wonderful start to the series. (Technically, there is a book .5, but it was published after the first two books in this series.) There are so many interesting characters and a whole lot of secrets being kept. Not so much about the current situation, a world after a terrible bacterium sweeps through the world and kills and/or changes those infected, but about their pasts. Who and what they were before the world changed.
Lynne and Jax are just what each other need. Neither seems to want to admit they may need anyone, though. For Jax, even before things went to hell, he hasn’t had much luck the few times he’s let anyone in behind his thick walls. For him, Lynne is a means to an end. A possible cure to this terrible disease. But she’s also just one more person he feels responsible for and has to protect. Just like his whole clan of misfits he has gathered since the fall of the norm. For Lynne, she needs that protection from Jax while trying to find a secret lab that may have information she needs to find a cure. There’s a lot of mistrust which, of course, leads to things being more difficult than it needs to be. Yet you can’t fault either of them for their trust issues.
Not only do Jax and Lynne have amazing chemistry, but they don’t play nice. It’s almost, at times, an enemies to lovers type of situation. (There’s also forced proximity and one bed, both favorites of mine.) I absolutely adore the endearments that come out of Jax’s mouth so easily without him even realizing he’s calling Lynne by pet names.
The author used some spot-on quotes at the beginning of each chapter that I thoroughly enjoyed. Some were from her characters, others from real life famous scientists and philosophers. The quote before the chapter thing doesn’t always work for me, but in this case it was perfect.
Like I said, I really found all of the characters interesting. I’m looking forward to all of their stories and secrets to be revealed. I’d also love to see some old friends come back into Lynne’s circle eventually.
