"You were undercover. I'm undercover." She found herself saying: "It's a hellish world."

New in town Starr finds a job under the local crime boss as a bodyguard for a dancing ghoul. Thankless, disgusting, and dangerous work specially as Lucille, the monster in question, is smarter than she should be. It all gets more complicated when tensions rise between gangs making Starr's job harder with potentially dire consequences.

Yuck! But in a good way, a fine balance between gore and guts and character work. Confusing though, Tamsyn Muir tried to do far too much world building for the amount of pages she had. It took me two or three short chapters to realize that the city they were in moved and in the end I didn't feel like that mattered all that much. Same with the gangsters' infighting and issues with the law, it bogged down the central plot. The characters were the best part of this short story and the ending did surprise me so it was a good read.

I didn't really care for this one, I feel like the start wasn't the best and instead of being mysterious it just left me confused in some parts with how it was written. I think the idea was good it just wasn't executed well in my personal opinion.

Ok this is good! This is my second favorite in the series so far! Amy Starr is an undercover cop infiltrating a crime ring in a dystopian world. This novella is chalk full of character, gore, surprises, and world building. Muir packs a punch in less than 60 pages. Although it falls a little short character development wise and leaves a little confusion about the world/environment (when/where/how etc.) the content we are given is creative and engaging. Definitely a solid 60 page read!

As on bran, Muir just keeps you entertained with the complex riddles and mysteries of the story, the lesbians and the gory action, until finally all the plot twists unfold and everything clicks into place and you are left dumbfounded, grossed out and fascinated by her work. Very interesting story and I definitely didn't see the plot twists coming so all my love to this author for always keeping me on my tippy toes.
