Another stellar five star reread. You absolutely could not go wrong with reading Hamlet. I just finished tabbing the last page and I already miss him.
Every single scene had incredible lines, whether they're philosophically poignant, humorous, or romantic. I was fast running out of tabs. I think I went through 5 sets at least.
Some new(ish) thoughts about the characters I had with this reread:
Hamlet: he is such a dramatic diva and everyone is in love with him (or rather, he is very shippable with anyone--except Ophelia). Just theatre kid things
Polonius: I actually enjoyed him as a character more than Claudius. He was funny and always sticking his nose in everywhere(look where that got him) . Also love the multiple foreshadowing surrounding him and his family
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: I still can't tell the two apart. Although it's funny just how annoyed Hamlet was with the both of them
Horatio: an absolute sweetheart, the best man in this play. Hamlet was such a menace to everyone and yet he stayed faithfully and lovingly by his side. Arguably the best character.
The moral(s) of the story? One, never let your enemies see the pearly gates. Two, don't snoop or you'll die. Lastly, everything is romantic. I love this play.

While I did read this in high school, I absorbed approximately nothing back then. Now, 17 years older, I can truly appreciate how fantastic this play is. Hamlet is easily the most complex character of Shakespeare’s I’ve read during this run of plays. He’s dutiful to his family, he’s absorbed by revenge, he’s a cunning architect of schemes, he’s a madman, he’s a gentleman duelist, he’s a lover, and he’s a friend and enemy.
Beyond Hamlet, so many of the characters have great dialogue that I realize just how ubiquitous this play has become in our society. “To be or not to be” “Alas, poor Yorick” (Poor Yorick’s was the name of my university’s coffee shop attached to the library) “infinite jest” and even “goodnight, sweet prince” all of these come from Hamlet.
Beyond that, the world Shakespeare creates feels the most realistic and lived-in. Whereas some plays have a setting that is random and non-specific, it feels as if Denmark and Elsinore are characters just as much as everyone else. We have the Fortinbras subplot, the trips to/from England (RIP Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, at least you have your own separate play). It’s some of Shakespeare’s best world building to date.
