One of my favorite Nicholas Sparks' books! Great to read while on vacation at the beach.

Nice Book! Very romantic but very real at the same time. Easy to get lost in the story without internalizing it so much.
Very clear cut character and situations!
emotional hopeful sad medium-paced

I love the movie. It has been awhile since I've seen it, but the book and movie are about equal in my mind over liking one more than the other. What I enjoyed was being able to soak in the words of the letters more than what you can do with the movie version.

The theme of this book is as the title suggests is Messages in bottles that are sent out to sea. It starts off in the future after the story the book explains has happened with Teresa Osborne - A columnist from Boston - is reliving the last two years. It then goes into the past and shows how the whole story started and how Teresa's life had been turned upside down with one jog in the summer. While she is Jogging on Holiday in cape cod she stumbles across a bottle with a message inside. After she reads it she is so touched by it's content that she shows it to her friend Deanna who Suggests publishing the heartfelt letter from a man named Garrett to a woman named Catherine in her column. They change the names to initials and publish it. Later a reader calls Teresa and explains to her that she has found another letter by the same person and emails it to her , she also finds another letter again by Garrett to Catherine and she is intrigued by finding three heartfelt letters from the same person and finds herself thinking about Garrett and confides in Deanna who helps her track down Garrett and convinces her to go find him she does so and then he asks her to go sailing with him they eventually start a long distance relationship and he bonds with her son - Kevin - and they end up falling in love harder than both of them could have anticipated. but what happens when Garrett finds out what drew Teresa to his small town? and will his undying feelings for Catherine ever subside?

This book really renewed my faith in destiny and as always Nicolas Sparks draws you into the story and makes you believe that everything can really go right for the main characters then right then when you just think everything is going right , everything suddenly goes wrong and you're left feeling sad and losing faith in true love at all , but even if the ending of this book got abit depressing i still loved every part of it and it left me wishing for more! The theme of this book is as the title suggests is Messages in bottles that are sent out to sea. boy, did I hate this! Well, ok, maybe not absolutely hate, I mean, I read till the end didn't I? Fact is I wasn't expecting much and even so I managed to be disapointed. Not only is it too romancy for me, why does the author has to describe every thought and gesture in such detail? Doesn't leave any space for the reader's imagination.
well I'm glad I read it anyway because I was prejudiced against Sparks and at least now I know my prejudice was justified.

This book was wonderful. The love story was great. I almost cried when I read his final letter to Theresa. I recommend it to everyone!

Message in a bottle was one of those book that remained with me even after years of reading it and suddenly it was on my recommended section of kindle so I start reading it again. If you don't know like all sparks novel this is a tearjerker and did I cry like a baby everytime. I'm not a huge Nicholas sparks fan but I like his stories.

This book is emotionally charged, and like the majority of Sparks's works, it has the saddest ending. Along the way, there are beach houses, oceans, boats, love letters, and romances. However, as is frequently the case, reality and emotions soon come between them, and they must also deal with their misunderstandings. Overall, this was a typical Sparks work that is also a mega tearjerker and a beautiful love story.

The book has its faults like the depiction of women by a male author is evident through out the dialogues. The story often feels unrealistic too. But in the end the central theme and emotions of this book still outweighs the negative aspects.

Seriously? So, that's it? That's how it ends? At first, I just can't get over with how their story ended.

If you were to read the synopsis or have a glimpse on one of the author's excerpts, you will know firsthand, that this is very Nicholas Sparks. I think it is quite stereotypical to say that most of his novels were centered around the happily-ever-after, about endless love and butterflies in your stomach, about "I'm irrevocably in love with you," and about perfect-swoony-well-proportioned guys that will sweep you off your feet when in fact, it's not really the case. Most of his novels were sad, depressing and filled with inconsolable endings. Nevertheless, the message of his novels had been very clear since its publication; it's awe-inspiring and very encouraging as well. It was always about the greatest love you could ever find having its own variations and forms. Not only about love that exists between a man and a woman, but love towards your family, friends and even unrelated ones.

description

As I've learned the perspective of the author, I fully understand why it ended that way. Message in a Bottle was inspired by the love story between Nicholas' parents. His father grieve for four years over the loss of his wife. During his hour of bereavement, he met another woman (Theresa, on the fictional novel), and his heart started to beat again. They were engaged soon after but unfortunately, two weeks later after the announced engagement, his father had a car accident. Shortly after, his father passed away. Truly, a real life sad story.

Nicholas Sparks' books for me are definitely not a love story but stories about love. Despite such circumstances beyond our control, be it loss, fate, or death; his books allow us to believe that LOVE is not another fantasy, that we can certainly love a person selflessly in a way we could never imagine possible.

Although there were lots of mature scenarios in which a young adult cannot realistically relate to, the writing style had been light and quite easy to read. This is best for those who have long distance relationship issues and those who have lost their loved one.

Even though, Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn were able to justify their characters as Garette Blake and Theresa Osborne respectively through their convincing and impressive acting skills; I still prefer the book over movie adaptation. There were tons of details and emotions that the movie failed to capture. They changed a lot of things and characters so that it will appear as very "movie-like" especially the significance of the role of Deanna and Jeb Blake, Garette's father. Nonetheless, I like how they incorporate the families, whom Garette saved during the storm, showing how he sacrificed himself over the promise of a future with Theresa (*okay, enough of the babble, this is not a movie review).

Overall, this book is all about:
1. Finding love
2. Losing It
3. Taking Chances
4. And allowing your heart to love again

This book with its cheesy lines and artistic flirtations set in the 20th century is such a good and satisfying break from contemporary young adult novels.

Favorite Quotes

That initial anger she had felt turned to sadness, and now it had become something else, almost a dullness of sorts. Even though she was constantly in motion, it seemed as if nothing special ever happened to her anymore. Each day seemed exactly like the last, and she had trouble differentiating among them.

But even though she was attractive, there was something else about her that caught his eye. She was intelligent, he could sense that right away, and confident, too, as if she were able to move through life on her own terms. To him, these were the things that really mattered. Without them, beauty was nothing.

Nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy. Remember that.

There are winds of destiny that blow when we least expect them. Sometimes they gust with the fury of a hurricane, sometimes they barely fan one’s cheek. But the winds cannot be denied, bringing as they often do a future that is impossible to ignore.
