“i learned being assaulted was expensive”

overall: get f*cked if you don’t believe women, and chanel, i believe you and i know your name.

more specifically: brock (guilty of 3 counts of sexual assault since fingering without consent wasn’t legal rape in california at the time of the assault) and his father (defender of sexual assault) can rot in hell. his dad saying “the verdict” ruined brock’s life as opposed to brock ruining his own life by raping someone. saying brock has never been violent, even though he sexually assaulted someone — you idiot, how is that not violent? brock himself saying he’d do everything he could to educate people on the dangers of alcohol, as if drunkenness is an excuse for touching people without their consent. all that to say: they can truly rot in hell.

i’m also disgusted by the women who reviewed this book and said it was “unbelievable how many times she says she was sexually harassed.” i’m very glad you have not experienced as much, but that doesn’t make your experience the believable range of sexual harassment.

my own reflection: i remember the first time a man assaulted me. the details about what i was wearing, if i’d been drinking, if i’d said no, (insert horrible line of questioning here) do not matter. what matters is this: an adult man groped a teenager in broad daylight, with witnesses, and saw nothing wrong with that.

i long for the day when our society teaches men to not rape and/or sexually assault women rather than telling women how to protect themselves from sexual violence.

I think this book should be a required reading to graduate high school.

For survivors. For those who know survivors and would like to have a better understanding. For anyone who wants a peek at what it's like to seek justice in our current legal system. Not an easy read, but necessary and moving one.

Fantastic book but I couldn’t handle it. I have a lot of healing to do before I can try to read this one again.
