Whereas the first book struck me as a Jane Austen novel gone deliciously wrong with a streak of somewhat unnecessary fantasy trappings to give it pizzazz, this continuation of the story leans much more heavily on the fantasy in that you would be very hard pressed to tell the story without it - and it's a very compelling tale that justifies the slow setup.
Briefly, Ophelia now finds herself very much out of the shadows as she thrusts herself fully into court life, grabbing the impossible-to-hold attention of this societies ruler-come-deity, a prospect as useful as it is dangerous. While we explore this new world and Opehlia's ever-changing status within it, mysteries sneak up unexpectedly (rather neatly done) as the book unfolds.
This sequel has a more satisfying, less rushed ending than the first book - although this time it's one more of plot than emotional journey, although my goodness Ophelia develops massively over this volume.
Bring on the next one!

This book centers around mysterious disappearances and who is behind them. I found that having the mystery at the center was a great way to focus the book while the overarching plotline of the quartet also progressed in the background.
We get some really important information in this book and I think it goes a long way toward making the world feel more real. In the first book, I felt much like Ophelia, thrown into a complex and often confusing world. Though this did a great job of making me connect with Ophelia as a character, I did prefer this book because Dabos' world is finally becoming more clear.
I am even more excited to continue on to the next installment and learn more about the world. The character work in this book was great and I hope this continues to be a focus in the next book.

However i still have a problem with the main character and the way she is treated. She is the mousy literate clumsy trope main character and she has begun standing up for herself and actually doing things however almost everyone in the story walks all over her. Her parents and her fiancé make decisions for her al the time and it drives me nuts. Although maybe that’s the point. but either way it’s annoying to read. id prefer less misogyny in my fantasy novels thanks
