I liked Mairin a lot and the McCabe bros were sweet! Looking forward to the rest of this trilogy

The heroine started off promisingly spunky, but then devolved into a watering pot who wept *constantly.* Also, plot moppet warning.
His gaze narrowed and she could see his hands twitching again like he’d love nothing more than to throttle her. She was beginning to think it was an affliction of his. Did he go around wanting to choke the life out of everyone or was she special in that regard?
3.5 Stars
The new McCabe Trilogy by Maya Banks has everyone talking at the moment, so I decided to hop on the Highlander bandwagon with everyone else, and the first book in this series does not disappoint. Unfortunately for those hardcore highlander fans these men don’t wear kilts; however they still have many redeeming qualities.
Mairin Stuart who is the illegitimate daughter of the former King of Scotland poses a very generous dowry men would kill to possess, she’s had to spend her life hidden away to ensure she isn’t forced into marriage for the wrong reasons. But her choices are taken away from her when a group of men kidnap her and deliver her to Duncan Cameron, a brute of a man that has respect for no one bar himself. On the way to him the group of men escorting her find a young boy named Crispen trying to steal a horse, they plan to execute him for his actions; he’s the son of the McCabe clan and has managed to get lost so Mairin takes it upon herself to be his protector. When she refuses to willingly wed Duncan Cameron he decides to beat within an inch of her life; but luck seems to be on their side and they are both quickly spirited away in the dead of night and head for the McCabe keep.
Ewan and Mairin get off on the wrong foot, she’s a strong willed woman and Ewan doesn’t like anyone disobeying his orders. Since she refuses to tell him her name or where she comes from he decides she’ll stay until he gets his way. What made it so much easier to get past some of the insulting and demeaning things he says to Mairin is seeing things from his point of view. He may be thinking one thing but entirely different words are coming out of his mouth. My favorite part of this book is Crispen; he has got to be the most courageous 8 year old boy I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. His interactions with Ewan bring out an different side of him which made me love him all the more.
I can definitely see why this series has everyone talking, the first book blew me away and I can’t wait for Alaric and Caelen’s books. I plan to start book two straight away!
“Sweeting? You need your sleep?” Caelen mimicked. “I think you’re missing your scrotum, brother.”

One guess what this book is about... ;)
This actually started out as a 5 star book. The beginning is really well done. Then for some reason the tone shifts dramatically once the H/H meet. I actually didn't mind what the tone switched to--more of a light hearted historical with a few emotional moments--but the switch is pretty jarring. I also felt the heroine's behavior depended on the needs of the plot. And like other readers, I felt like I'd read this story before. That said, I did enjoy it as a whole and the other two brothers were interesting enough that I'll continue the series.

The first part was really good, but the ending dropped it down from a 4 star to a 3.
