The Murder Stone by Louise Penny

My favorite Louise Penny so far. I enjoyed the change from Three Pines and how this novel felt more insular. I was able to keep track of everything - and everyone - much more efficiently during this story and I was guessing the murderer up until the very end. One thing I didn't love is how Penny goes out of her way to withhold information from the reader that might help us solve the mystery. Even in the ending, climactic scene she refers to the murderer as "the murderer" rather than by their name for multiple pages which I found frustrating.

I loved this trip away from Three Pines, though still with a good bit of familiar characters. Same warmth. I enjoyed this mystery as well. It kept me guessing.

Best line: the only thing money can buy is more space

[Gamaches on anniversary trip at manor. Peter’s horrible family also there]

This is one of those series where you become
more invested and more in love with every character, even as you get to know their flaws. So glad I finally started it!

Chief Inspector Gamache never disappoints! The Finneys have been the strangest family I have come across on paper, yet. Such discordant members all thrust together could only create noise and that's what they do.

Honestly, I come to Three Pines for Gamache and this book has both the Gamaches! What a lovely series this is turning out to be.

Louise Penny is such a genius that even the "butler did it" trope worked and she even had Armand mention it in passing and in jest. I love cheeky writing!

A unique murder. A truthful telling of the complicated relationship between family members. A reminder that love needs to “believe the best” to be true. And a beautiful portrayal of landscape.
