"American Spy" was on my library list for months, and I was so excited to finally read it, but it turned out to be kind of a disappointment. Maybe it's because I listened to it and maybe didn't get as much out of it, but I couldn't get into this storyline. I'd heard so many good things and people touting it as a great spy thriller, but honestly I found "When We Left Cuba" to be more of a spy thriller than this. I was never on my toes, and the characters didn't pull me in quite enough to really root for them. Maybe someday I'll give it another go, but right now it just didn't suit me.

Not the spy thriller I was expecting. Very slow paced and I’m still not sure if I enjoyed reading a story told through letters. It made keeping track of all the characters even more difficult. By the end of the book I succumbed to accepting that some characters I just wasn’t going to be able to keep track of. Had I done better with taking notes of who all the characters were, I would’ve liked this book a lot more, as it’s less about the spy aspect and more about the main character’s journey, who happens to be a spy.

One of the best books I've ever read. Wilkinson deals with morality and the nuances of right and wrong so beautifully. Plus, I love that this spy novel isn't your typical spy novel. It features an African American woman spy and the challenges she faces -- and won't back down from. Just love!

I had a really hard time keeping all of the characters (and politics) straight. Can attribute some of this to finishing it while participating in an overnight relay – that said, if I had had another book on hand I probably would have stopped reading this one altogether.
