Cassandra in Reverse

The premise of time travel to give oneself a second chance was interesting. The author overdid this time travel, in my opinion. I lost interest. Having said that, Cassandra is an interesting character, funny and sharp. She is on the spectrum, like the author. The book reveals how difficult it is for people with autism to navigate everyday life because folks around them do not recognize their condition.

I enjoyed the first half more than the second just because I was not into the Art character.

I started listening to this in audiobook, and the narrator was very good. But the repetition of the time travel was tedious, so I switched to print so I could stomach the repetition a bit better. It did help, and I was able to finish the final half of the book in one sitting. Cassandra's boyfriend, Will, breaks up with her and in a fit of rage she suddenly discovers she has the power to turn back time. She initially decides to use this power to win Will back, and to fix all the things she did wrong the first time around. As someone who is super sensitive to sound, texture, light, etc, she often has a very difficult time functioning in the busy streets of London. She ends up using time travel to giver herself do-overs when she has meltdowns, things don't go her way, or she screams what's actually on her mind. There are several facets of the book that start to feel tedious, although who among us wouldn't want the opportunity to have say what we really think to someone and then go back and erase that moment from time?

I also really did not like the ending.

Most of the book was a 3 star read for me, but I really enjoyed the ending and Cassandra's journey to discover true happiness and her self-discovery, as well. The time-travel got old. I enjoyed the references to Greek literature, but not reader will understand those connections.

I went on my library app to grab a silly sci-fi read and saw this one, so I didn't read the reviews or anything but the basic description. This was a cathartic, but completely unexpected one. I was not prepared for a book like this. I don't know how it reads to non-autistive people, but this felt like reading a story about myself 10 years ago when I was the protagonist's age.

I'm a late-diagnosed autistic woman. I cried when reading this book. A lot.
