I had just read another time travel book so that probably made this one less fun. Overall it was cute and a little different than others. The trying to force a relationship to work angle was unique, relatable, and pretty interesting
I want to love Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale because representation matters, because I love the opening, and because the character discovers the ability to go back in time and live moments over. Unfortunately, despite all the reasons I want to love the book, I end up not the reader for this book. Unfortunately, the ending makes the whole thing worse. No spoilers, but I really, really wish that the ending was different!

I so badly wanted to love this book, but it wasn't for me. I did like the authors acknowledgments at the end.
Cassandra “Cassie” Penelope Dankworth’s journey to self-acceptance is a love note to anyone, neurodivergent or otherwise, who has ever felt they were too much of anything at all in a world that can be disorienting to those who prefer to color outside the imaginary lines. So, it makes perfect sense that one of Cassie’s super powers is that she feels in shades and hues. Dreamy, right?
To relate to the world that she doesn’t always feel she fits into, she frequently shares anecdotes from Greek mythology. One day, she wakes up to find herself time traveling through her very own modern-day Greek tragedy, but now with the option to “fix” her many wonderful quirks and the tribulations she has experienced up to the present day. But, to her surprise, she soon discovers there was really nothing broken in the first place. Quite the opposite.
Cassandra is a true heroine to the “over-thinkers” who really think just enough and creatures of habit who just know what they like and all of the people who make the world more vivid and rich just by being here.

had higher expectations but i did that to myself tbh. it was an interesting concept but my attention span could not keep track of the timelines. i liked the greek mythology tie ins and honestly did tear up at the end. oh and loved the neurodivergent rep!
I was really delighted by the story of Cassandra, a neurodivergent woman who has just had the worst day of her life, losing her job, her boyfriend, and her housing in one fell swoop. Fortunately she has also been gifted with the ability to travel back in time and see if she can undo it all.
The beginning has you thinking this will be a rom-com, but it’s so much more. It’s about being seen and loved as you are, confronting the past, accepting the present, and finding a way to love yourself and others in all our complicated humanity.
I HIGHLY recommend listening on audio. The narration is excellent, and I think it probably added a star to the whole experience. There are multiple accents and SO MUCH personality in each of the characters. It made me fall in love with all of them.

I was surprised with how much I loved this book. The story seemed fun, and having the time traveling aspect combined with an autistic individual made it more so. But what surprised me was how heartwarming it was! I love when books become more then you expect. And this one did. Highly recommend!

Ik heb de Geek Girl serie van Holly in mijn boekenkast staan én Graeme Simsion the Rose Project dus dit boek leek me perfect voor mij.
Cassandra Dankworth heeft vandaag niet bepaald haar dag. Nadat ze door haar vriend is gedumpt, ontslagen is bij haar PR-baan omdat ze geen ‘mensenmens’ is én haar woonsituatie op de klippen loopt, krijgt ze op wonderbaarlijke wijze het vermogen om 4 maanden terug in de tijd te reizen. Cassandra krijgt de kans om dingen anders te doen en ze moet en zal haar fouten herstellen!
Dit boek gaat over meer dan tijdreizen. Het gaat over tweede kansen en jezelf echt leren kennen. Ik vond het fantastisch om Cassandra’s gedachten te kunnen lezen. Ze wordt vaak door anderen verkeerd begrepen. Ze is onbedoeld onbezonnen, geeft de voorkeur aan voorspelbare situaties en mist vaak social cues. In dit boek lees je hoe ze de wereld probeert te navigeren als iemand op het spectrum, ook al is ze van dit laatste zich nog niet bewust.
Er komt veel Griekse mythologie voor in het boek vanwege Cassandra’s interesse in het onderwerp. Ze probeert via de Grieken situaties behapbaar te maken en het is een leuke toevoeging. Daarnaast heeft ze meerdere kleurenkaarten gemaakt van verfstalen en door te focussen op specifieke kleuren kan ze zichzelf o.a. kalmeren. De emoties die mensen uitstralen ziet Cassandra ook als kleuren, maar ze vindt het lastig deze te peilen.
Cassandra maakt grote stappen in het boek en ik vind het mooi hoe ze uiteindelijk toch bij zichzelf blijft. Sommige gebeurtenissen zijn hilarisch, andere serieus: het herstellen van relaties; de oprechte, kwetsbare momenten waarop ze zich openstelt voor anderen; tijdreizen om opnieuw van een moment te kunnen genieten. Uiteindelijk moet ze erachter komen wie ze werkelijk is en wat ze met haar leven wil doen.
Ik ben zelf niet autistisch, maar zeker wel neurodivergent. Daardoor kon ik me goed inleven in haar wereld. Holly Smale schetst Cassandra niet als een vreemde vogel, maar laat zien dat ze een individu is met bijzondere en fantastische eigenschappen.

This was close to a 5 star but I found Cassandra a little whingy sometimes.
