Oh my gosh, all the feels. This book was so good. Happy and sad, funny but serious. As a trans individual myself it was so great to see myself represented by the main character.

I love loved the concept and world building  of this book.
I also really loved the banter and relationships Yadriel has with Julian and Martiza. The love story was so adorable I really wouldn’t have been able to handle a bittersweet ending between those two 😭
The climax had me simultaneously bawling and cursing @ Thomas for the pain! The way my gut dropped when I turned onto Chapter 24…it was narratively such a good choice but I was also pissed because it did its job of wrecking me, you know?

I found the twist/reveal upsetting, it’s like, even though I figured it out beforehand because this character was the only viable option—it’s just devastating because you don’t /want/ it to be them. But I also feel like that’s why it works 😭 yet another great narrative choice for maximum pain 😭😭!

- very cute spooky, mostly closer to middle-grade but with some more graphic violence at the end that pushes it more towards YA
- Great characters, great chemistry, the romance-y bits with the car etc were perfect
- sometimes cheesy leaning into identity politics (mostly the vegan and side-queer things, a little more telling than showing), but the author is trans and this is a great trans MC treated with so much love and honesty
- all the flipping back and forth with thinking people were really dead at the end was a bit much, and lessened the impact eventually.
- I wish the author had taken more time with the ending- I get the value of a simple happy ending, but the things they went through at the end weren't simple and I don't think the character's reactions were very realistic or relatable. Yadriel and Julian can care deeply for each other and still experience their own pain and recovery, without completely ignoring everyone trying to help them. Then again, they're teenage boys, so maybe that part just wasn't for me.
- Very disappointed that the queer-coded uncle was evil. However, the text does an excellent job of highlighting that he was corrupted by an outside source, and the brujx community takes responsibility for their part in creating that vulnerability, so I think it was very well done.

-Overall, this was fun and sweet and I'm sure will mean so much to kids and teens who need this story with them. Glad I read it.

i really enjoyed this book! the strongest parts were the opening and the ending because i felt as if that was when the characters and plot strength were at their strongest. the rising of the plot action and the connecting of the romance plot and the other plot could have been incorporated together a little bit more because throughout this book, they seemed to drift off from each other a little too much to the point that i forgot what the main plot was. the characters are complex and well-written especially as teenagers. this author is very good at writing believable banter and genuinely funny jokes that teenagers would say. i greatly appreciated this. i felt that some parts of the book could be a little too clear on what the author was trying to get across but that could also be because it is their first book (and an incredible entrance into the young adult world). my main criticism definitely lies in the plot build up and a little in the romance area. i felt as if more could have been added into the story to really fully demonstrate why the romance was happening and i felt that there needed to be more emphasis on the main plot. there should have been more things going wrong; more clues that something bad was happening (i thought the hints that were given were GREAT
especially when they write about yadriel's tiò being constantly overlooked and the missing jaguar foot
but i never got the sense that something really bad and scary was going on until the main action. THE MAIN ACTION WAS GREAT THOUGH. absolutely incredibly written. i like guessing the endings of books and this one was just predictable enough that i already knew what would happen (to an extent) but the climax point was so well written that i was still on the edge of my seat. the characters are great. the development is amazing. the representation of the trans experience?? chef's kiss.
