I’m mad there’s no sequel. Also this book could’ve been longer for a stronger ending, or shorter bc I felt like there was a lot of random “fluff”
There were a lot of things I liked about this book (and, admittedly, because it was on Obama’s list, I wanted to love it) …. But I just couldn’t get past all the wandering trains of thought, the jumping perspectives, the purposefully unanswered questions. The writing is good and there’s some commentary on race and parenthood sprinkled in (somewhere, I swear). But ultimately I felt unsatisfied at the end, if I’m being honest.
DNF’d this book after 14 pages because this guys writing was so pretentious and gross
Disappointing and infuriating. I only kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened.
Fails to build tension and it only really gets going when you're half way in. First half is too wordy and too slow. Any dialogue is interrupted by too much backstory that fails to add anything and leads to a lack of clarity. Feels like it's been padded with gumpf and needs a darned good edit. Annoying characters that are difficult to relate to.
There was one moment of brilliance for me in chapter 22 when the author describes a noise.
