Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. 3.5?

I'll say that this is likely to be one of those books that you you either love or hate with no middle ground.

The style of the prose annoyed me immensely and I had to push through. However, I soon grew used to it. At about the halfway point, and certainly in the latter 25%, the tension picked up and had me gripped. Sadly, though, we never do find out what's happened. No clue what the actual catastrophe is, aside from the odd hint buried here and there in the vastly flowery prose.

A final point is that the narrative is told from omniscient point of view, which leads to chronic head hopping. However, the author did this well enough that I could get along with it for the most part. Only a couple of times did I have to stop and re-read to ascertain who's head I was in at a particular point. What didn't work was that the voices of the kids read exactly like the voices of the adults.

All in all, it's an okay read but not I will not be recommending it to others.

2.5 stars; I'm not really sure what I just listened to? I didn't mind some of the superfluous descriptions that others complained about & I liked the character development (they all felt like *real* people to me), but I'm missing the thriller / plot of this book. I guess it's more lit fiction than story-driven, but the synopsis is all about: "who can trust who? What is happening out in the world?"
SpoilerAnd that all sort of falls away during the book and the end.
I enjoyed listening to the story to hear where it would go, but I would have a hard time recommending it to someone else. It'll be interesting to see how closely the Netflix adaptation is to the book.

Understated and suspenseful - the third person narration lets the reader know that something is very, very wrong. Occasionally overly wrought and wordy, but an interesting look into race and micro-aggression. I think I was expecting more of a thriller, and wanted some more traditional suspense techniques.

i got this book at dollar tree bc it looked hilariously badly written. that first impression wasnt entirely wrong, and its def a fitting place to find it. very strange and rambling descriptions of things, generally unpleasant characters, recurring focus on the sexuality of the children, and just a plodding plot. it gets two stars because i did like how it spiraled and meandered into something interesting—a vague atmosphere of disaster and confusion. i just wasnt a fan of how intensely unlikable the white family is, and how uncaring the black family seemed. beach read if youre curious enough but dont buy it for cover price. just wait for it to come around the bargain bins.

I rated this book as four stars because it absolutely kept my attention and kept me guessing. That being said, the ending was very disappointing. While the story meandered and alluded to some sort of explanation, I felt let down at the eventual conclusion to this literary work. A very interesting and fun read, as long as your expectations for a resolution are kept in check.
