This is such an important story and yet the writing was not remotely gripping. It read like a cheesy grocery store novel, especially during the allusions to romance, keeping the book feeling off-kilter for the rest dealing with serious subject matters. I appreciated the feminism and anti-racism. It may have been better told first person? The writing felt too flimsy for me to take any of it seriously.

This was a beautiful book full of fierce female friendships and the touch librarians have in our life. And it was sad and hopeful, historical and mysterious, all wrapped in

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Having read and enjoyed other JoJo Moyes novels, I wasn't expecting this story to be as moving and engrossing as it was. I grew to love all of the travelling librarians, and root for them. I didn't see the twist coming (although I probably should've), and I was genuinely afraid things wouldn't turn out for the best (even though that would've rendered this not a romance!)
