Absolutely enthralled by the characters, complexity of plot, elements superstition/devilry, and the seafaring tale. I believe the author has said he does not write series but his ability to make me like and appreciate Sara Wessel and Arent Hayes as protagonists…well, I would love to see what happens next in their lives.

I was hoping to enjoy this story about as much as I did Evelyn Hardcastle, but it fell a little flat for me. I really enjoyed the mystery and the twist behind the mystery because like Evelyn Hardcastle I did not see it coming. Even though religion was involved I enjoyed that it was more in the background and not the full focus of the story.

I like this author. The story was fun to read and the setting was the first of its kind for me. Also, the author’s note at the end was hilarious. I admit the map and list of names on the inside cover were a great help in keeping things straight and mystery tinted stories alway kinda turn me around a bit

I did not love it. To me, it was a long slog through a complicated story. The story itself was solid but yeesh! Get to the point. I waited so long for anything significant to happen that I didn’t care that much by the end. When the final mystery was revealed I admit I was totally shocked even though there were clues. The ending was too perfect and made me roll my eyes.
To summarize: well written in some ways but the pace was way too slow and it was full of endless minutiae that was boring to get through.
