I am a big Stuart Turton Fan..., ok, he's only written the two books, but his first, [b:The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle|36337550|The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle|Stuart Turton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1506896221l/36337550._SY75_.jpg|57528323] is my all time favourite mystery book... so that this, his second is a solid 4 stars keeps me a fan..

the plot was engaging, and his writing excellent. Perhaps it's just that after his first book was so VERY innovative, I had very high expectations for this book, which is in itself, a solid mystery.

I must say that I was not entirely taken with the ending (the mystery itself is fine), but the promise of a sequel of this book does not draw me in...

I think this author is innovative, and I look forward to the next direction his writing takes him... in another direction...

Loved it! (full review on Amazon)

It started off so good then went completely off the rails in a old-school mystery kind of way where there's zero way the reader can decuce anything because none of the info is there for them to try to solve the puzzle.
Liked not knowing if the book was supernatural or not until the end.

a romp! 4&1/2 rounding up because i tore through this and had fun!

After 7 1/2 Deaths, I knew I’d read anything Turton writes. This book did not disappoint. Much like 7 1/2 Deaths, the plot build up resolves in only the last few pages. Though I didn’t see the end coming, I do think that’s particularly because the characters extend too much uncharacteristic forgiveness.

No. It was too convoluted for me.

OK it harps back to classic Agatha Christie 'closed room' detective stories but the fact that it has to have a long chapter at the end where the main characters meet just to explain what was going on makes it a failure for me.

A very enjoyable and vivid tale of mystery and adventure that fits well alongside Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot mysteries.
