INCREDIBLE! an absolutely amazing slowburn horror. it's a perfect look into the mind of an abused woman/spouse, an amazing allegory for the destruction and seeming possession alcohol causes. it was a tough but cathartic read as a survivor. me personally? fuck jack torrance but u do u

I do love Stephen King, but I struggled with this one just because I hate Jack so much. Some of the passages were very difficult to read. The book was less spooky and more just full of dread because of the characters.

An excellent example of character driven horror, where the real nightmare isn't the supernatural circumstances at play, but the slow and inevitable descent of a person into their darkest flaws. My hatred and sympathy for Jack Torrance was balanced on a knife's edge throughout the entire book, and the tension of not knowing whether he would succumb to his flaws and the outlook's influences or rise to the occasion and become the person he knows he should be really elevated the stakes and the horror.
