Cred că aceasta este cartea mea preferată scrisă de King, binînțeles, după Jocul lui Gerald. Auzisem mai mult de film, carte era oarecum menționată în treacăt drept inspirația după care a fost făcut un film despre un om nebun cu un topor. Cam asta e tot ce știam, dar am zis că de ceva timp nu mai citisem Stephen King iar eu, deși nu sunt deloc fană a filmelor de groază, simt nevoia din când în când să citesc literatură dark/horror și Stephen King este prima alegere de fiecare dată. 
Intriga e destul de simplă, o familie care riscă să devină și mai săracă decât este deja se mută în hotelul Overlook unde tatăl a primit un job administrativ. Hotelul este undeva în munți, unde iernile sunt foarte grele, deci familia va rămâne izolată acolo singurele modalități de a contacta civilizația fiind un aparat de emisie radio și un snowmobil cu care ar putea ajunge la cel mai apropiat oraș dacă vremea nu este prea capricioasă. Înainte de a accepta jobul, Jack este avertizat că ultimul administrator ( nu mai știu exact pe ce pot a intrat dar făcea oarecum munca unui administrator) s-a sinucis după ce și-a ucis soția și cele două fete fiind victima unei presiuni psihologice cauzate de izolare care în final a dus la nebunie. Dar cum Jack și familia aveau cu disperare nevoie de bani ignoră acest nu foarte subtil semn de exclamare și se mută acolo împreună cu soția și băiețelul său. 
Un lucru care m-a bucurat foarte mult este că fiecare personaj primește atenție. Stephen King conturează povestea fiecăruia: aflăm de problemele pe care le are Jack cu alcoolul și cum acestea i-au ruinat viața, vedem cum și de ce a încercat să devină un tată și un soț mai bun, din perspectiva lui Wendy aflăm cum a fost viața alături de Jack, când a hotărât să pună punct și de ce a renunțat la idee. Nu în ultimul rând îl avem pe Danny, un băiețel simpatic și mult mai matur față de vârsta lui care are un dar special (de care oh...câtă nevoie are pe parcursul cărții). La un moment dat ai putea spune că este o ficțiune despte tiparul familiei ratate în care lucrurile merg irecuperabil de prost mereu, dar este Stephen King deci avem și partea de horror/supranatural. Nu vreau să intru în detalii pentru că nu vreau să dau spoilere; spun doar că Shining o să se joace cu pulsul și tensiunea arterială pe măsură ce lectura avansează pentru că este genul de horror misterios dacă pot să mă exprim așa care pur și simplu de captează și te învăluie. Nu cred că este cea mai de groază carte scrisă de King, dar din cele citite de mine (Mobilul, Christine și Jocul lui Gerald) aș zice că este pe primul loc. 
I-am acrodat 4 steluțe pentru că anumite pasaje de introspecție s-au suprapus cu momente mai intense când mi-ar fi plăcut ca acțiunea să curgă mai uniform. Nu este ceva care să strice plăcerea lecturii, însă a fost puțin deranjant pentru mine.

Stephen King's masterpiece...if he didn't feel it was necessary to use racist slurs every five seconds that in no way enriched the plot. If he can fully pull Rage out of print, he should also be willing to yank the harmful language from his books. It's would be so easy to express the violence and hatred of the hotel without using anti-black slurs. Disappointed but not surprised. 

And someone please give this man a course in how to write women. I'm so tired.

Review:

This was my first ever horror novel and I loved it. Everything about this was great, from the characters to the writing the the spookyness. It was a right balance between slow pace and fast pace. Just really loved this.
Didn't give it the full 5 stars, because there were minor things that bothered me.

I'm currently reading The shining by Stephen King. I'm reading this for the October readathon. 

I'm actually loving this so far. I didn't expect that. The writing, and translation; reading it in Dutch, are very good. The story itself is very interesting. So far it has been creepy, but not scary yet, so am excited about that part. But so far it's really good and it might even be a 5 star read.

It became pretty scary, but not too much; didn't have nightmares, which is good. There were a couple of small things that bothered me a little bit, so therefore not a full 5 stars, but a 4,5 stars. Check out my vlog for indepth thoughts: Reading my first ever horror book.
