I liked this well enough. It was a little unusual reading Dmitri’s story and having it turn out the way it did. His past is immensely tragic and ties in well with Honor’s brutal experience in captivity with a vampire. This was part vengeance plot, part love story/second chance romance, part I’m not sure what was going on with the blast from Dmitri’s past . I found all the plot angles really interesting if a little disparate and thus making it feel like too much was going on in the book. I also wish it had tied in more with the overarching plot built in Books 1-3. This is the first book since Book 1 that I felt could be read out of order as a standalone. It was very good, but in the scheme of the series, felt a bit like a “by the way” as it did not maintain the momentum of the rest of the series. That said, I enjoyed this- the romance was well put together and really healing considering the two main characters had histories of experiencing sexual abuse and torture. It was sort of a slow burn but there was some spice.

Definitely my most liked from the series so far I really appreciated stepping outside the main relationship and showing new characters. I liked both characters separately and how they worked together. I am still unsure about a certain element that was brought to light at the ending.

Heavy CW for rape, abuse, and child death.

One of the darker Singh books I've read. It definitely had potential, but I felt like she focused too much on the main characters and their relationship, which made the plot feel inconsistent and confusing. The plot was mostly getting revenge on past abusers, but there were other little bits thrown in with the rather obvious intention of teasing future novels in this series. The romance seemed to jump from 0 to 100 in a very jarring manner. I specifically remember when the fmc was like "i can't deny this thing between us" and I was like "wait what??" it just came out of nowhere.

Justine Eyre did okay. I liked her accents for Dmitri and Illium, but a lot of her inflections threw me off. For example, sometimes she would make a demand sound like a plea.

Overall, a bit lacking compared to other books I've read of hers, but definitely still interesting.
