I’ve wanted to read Pushing the Limits basically since it came out this year. I put it on hold at my library once it was available, and have been waiting ever since. I was number nine on the list for the last two months (I have no clue why for that long), and last week I finally gave up waiting and decided to buy the book. I rarely buy hardcover books, but I had faith in my fellow bloggers and felt like the purchase was worth it. IT TOTALLY WAS.
You guys, I loved this book. It had all of my favorite elements of writing packed into one glorious novel. Character driven? Check. Tough issues? Check. Multiple view points? Check. And all of it was done very well.
I absolutely loved the overall premise of the book. Both Noah and Echo are struggling with their own problems. Though the two are drastically different, this brings them together in an unlikely way. They decide to help each other find out some information that each party thinks will change their lives for the better. This partnership quickly turns to romance as the two discover that no matter how unlikely a successful relationship may seem, they are attracted to each other like magnets. The relationship takes a lot of trial and error, especially because both main characters have complicated lives and difficult pasts. Though through everything, they always seem to come back together. There are also a lot of differing family dynamics as well, and it’s interesting to see how these play out. Families aren’t always perfect and nuclear, which is portrayed very well in this story.
Noah and Echo, the two MCs, are fascinating characters. Noah lost both of his parents and has been bouncing around foster homes. He’s fighting for his two brothers, who are in a separate foster home, because he believes that only he can take care of them. He’s an angry young man, but much of this is the result of holding in a multitude of feelings. Echo has her own share of struggles, as she was in a terrible accident that involved her mother who has bipolar disorder. Echo cannot remember any part of the accident or why she has scars on her arms, but feels that knowing is the only way she will be able to move forward with her life. Throughout the novel, we see Echo face her trauma as she fights to remember the accident.
We see the story from both characters’ points of view, and both Echo and Noah are completely original. They both have strong voices and though their stories are intertwined, they stand alone as individual characters. I lovelovelove when multiple points of view are done well.
Everything about Pushing the Limits felt so real. It was entirely believable and vivid to the point where I even found myself crying at parts, which RARELY happens. It’s raw and honest and depicts a multitude of relationships in a realistic way. McGarry doesn’t minimize the issues the story deals with either, which I think is very important when a novel is dealing with trauma and mental illness. Basically what I am getting at is that Pushing the Limits is an amazing contemporary YA novel.
I’m not one to call a book a “must-read,” but I would really suggest that if you haven’t read this one yet, give it a try. It’s awesome. And so is Katie McGarry because not only is she an awesome author (did I mention this was her debut novel?!?), she put up with my tweets all weekend :) .

Aveam cu totul altceva in minte.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a lot deeper than I thought it would.
Thank you Net Galley!

4.5 Stars
What an emotional story! My heart was ripped from my chest so many times.
The story of Noah and Echo is not an easy one.
They both have suffered from traumatic tragedies.
They both have to learn to cope.
They both have something to gain...Normal.
They both have found help in Mrs. Collins and each other.
The feelings that this book elicited were raw. They were heart-wrenching. Real. My heart ached, for the little boys, for Noah, for Echo. I cried for their loss. I wanted to reach in and wrap my arms around each and every one of them.
Other times I felt like screaming and yelling. As a mother, I felt extreme rage. I didn't understand some of the things that went through this father's mind. I hated him. I still dislike him....notice the change in the word....! I do not care for Ashley. Though, I cannot fault her for her role in this whole thing. She was thrown into this situation by Echo's father. Is it fair to blame her? No.
I am truly appreciative that I read this book. I could sit here and go on for hours about how I felt about it. You don't realize how hard it is to write a review for something so emotional without giving anything away, until you actually sit down to do it.
Do yourself a favor...read it.

Very sexy and romantic, but overly dramatic, occasionally florid language makes this already far too long book a slightly onerous read.
This book was so good! I found myself not wanting to put it down! Echo and Noah are so cute. The story and the characters were amazing. 5 out of 5 stars for sure!
This book was.. so-so. I enjoyed reading it but I felt it didn't have much depth or point. While I didn't dislike Echo, I found myself enjoying Noah's character more even though what drew me to the book was Echo and her story. She just fell short of interesting, and I don't see myself reading the rest of the series.
