Each story was very compelling, the writing was great though I found the older language refreshing but difficult.

Traveling to Buenos Aires by ship, the narrator recognizes the current chess champion. But the real surprise was the stranger who can beat him. Amazing story of how the stranger learned to play chess at that level.

The rest of the stories are also interesting. The author’s life story is also fascinating. I bet his memoir, The World of Yesterday, is interesting. I should put that on my 2023 list. The book was published just days before the author and his wife took their own lives.

Thoroughly enjoyable book. Couldn’t fault it. A Game of Chess might be on my favourite short stories of all time.
