So short it would be hard not to read in one sitting, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if had read the stories more strung out.

A stellar collection. Lots of literature deals with things and people being really fucked up, but Black Cloud does so in an accessible, unique, well-constructed, and emotionally gripping way. When problems are identifiable sometimes one loses sight of the fact that it is people who have problems, and not autonomously existing issues like depression, sick relationships, awful parents and detrimental drug use; that's never the case with this collection. The writing was direct in a way that worked well with the subject matter and was not sentimental. Some of the more poetic language can sneak up on you while reading, but it is incorporated well. There are many ways to write well and the way she writes is one of them.

Short. Easily read in a single sitting or two.

I liked "Grunion Run" the best in this collection. It really crystallized the pressures and influences that were grinding the narrator against the stone of drug addiction and self-harm.

i never want to meet any of the overly serious, self-obsessed douchebags in juliet escoria's stories, most of all juliet herself
