I read this book as it was recommended on Reese’s bookclub.

Elin arrives at a luxury hotel in Switzerland that was previously a sanatorium before undergoing a recent major refurbishment - this bit is what led me to get the book.

She is a cop in Britain on extended leave due to PTSD. There is an avalanche so Swiss cops cannot reach the hotel so they put her “in charge” to help preserve the evidence and investigate - that is extremely unbelievable. I think the plot is a weak one and the author overreaches again and again to try to create suspense. The middle section of the book is going round in circles and gets quite dull. The plot twists were quite predictable.

🌟🌟🌟

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse is set in the Swiss Alps, during a snow storm and takes place at a newly refurbished hotel that was once a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. Based on the setting, the front cover and the synopsis I was expecting an eerie, creepy and possibly haunted type story, however, what I got was a standard murder/detective story. I found the main character annoying, her struggles from her past filtered into her present life but it became monotonous. I did not pinpoint the culprit, I had a couple ideas but I was wrong, the motives for the murders seemed a little bizarre. The book had short chapters and was a quick, easy read. It had plenty of potential but did leave me feeling disappointed. I don’t think I will be looking for the next book in the series.

Another overly hyped thriller. It was definitely creepy, but very slow and a bit of an anticlimax. I also found the protagonist extremely irritating. As for the final twist, it seems far fetched and merely there to set up for the (unnecessary) sequel.
