Jesmyn Ward is one of my new *favorite authors*. She brings her characters to life in a deep, gut-wrenching way. Even the secondary characters left their mark on me. Her spiritualness is a perfect level that reached my heart but wasn't religious or preachy.

I admit that I wanted this to be a sequel to "Savage the Bones", but I loved it even though it didn't involve the same characters. Maybe someday we will find out what happened to the other Bois characters.

Lyrical and swampy.

This was phenomenal. No big plot just sad sad slice of life. Slap an IMMEDIATE 5 stars onto this bad boy

Very difficult and painful but also beautiful and poignant.

I suppose that the absolutely mind blowingly gorgeous writing was what made this story so readable despite the heartbreaking subject matter. We must never forget the horrors of slavery and the many ways racial injustice has been part (and is currently part) of our nation's history.

Beautiful. Powerful. Hard. Not a lot of hope to balance it which is fine but makes for a challenging read, as it should.

کتاب تلخی بود. نه صرفا به معنی استعاری، داستان رسما مزه‌ی زهرمار می‌داد. عصبانی و غمگینم کرد.
