There were parts that I liked. But mostly I couldn’t figure out what the hell this book was supposed to be about thematically and the ending just bewildered me. There was just something about it I didn’t get. But I might give it another try down the road. Perhaps it wasn’t the right time.
I wanted to read this book because it made all the lists but it did not do it for me. I found it a chore to read. There were certain elements where I could appreciate like being parents when you shouldn't be one or being the kid with a non maternal mother.
The book solidified the fact that I am not a fan of mystical elements sprinkled into day to day settings. I couldn't even tell what time period this book was set in.

Ward's distinctive literary style shines here. She conveys complex characters and themes that wouldn't work without her flowing song-like writing. A challenging read in that it challenges the reader to think deeper (on the history of Mississippi, the complexities of addiction and "likeable characters" and so much more)
Graphic: Death, Drug use, Racism
Moderate: Violence, Police brutality
Minor: Rape
Read by a cast of actors. This book was good but strange. Beautifully written. The character development made me really care for some of the main characters...especially Jo Jo. The ghost element didn't really appeal to me.
Triggers for abuse and drug use and neglect and horrible horrible treatment of prisoners and black people in general.
