Hands down the best book I've read in a long time. Each character is clearcut and Marsh is a character that you can't help but root for. Sour Billy is so evil that it makes the book thrilling and you can't help but adore Marsh's devotion to his boat, like a lover, even when times get hard. The epilougue is short, sweet and beautiful. One of the best books i've ever read.

Disclaimer, I read this book after being recommended it as a branching off point from GRRM's non-ASOIAF books.

The first half of this book... was tough to get through for many reasons, but I'm only going to go into one. I have never hated a character more than I hated Sour Billy Tipton. Nor Joffrey, nor Ramsay (maybe Ramsay), nor Craster could rise such vitriolic anger I felt towards Sour Billy.
His death was the most cathartic thing to have ever happened to me.
It is purely because we are never in any of those characters' heads the way we are with Sour Billy.

The second half pleasantly surprised me. I think one of my biggest complaints is how a lot of the female characters are just non-characters. Like if you remove Valerie from the story, I don't think much would change.

Book good.

This is a wonderful book of rich, kind characters in a world that makes people cruel. It reads with the same steady pace as the river steamboats it is about and the epilogue was so touching it made me cry.

Lots of boat talk. Gets good towards the end.

i don't know what you're expecting from a George R. R. Martin book written in 1982, but expect liberal use of the N-word, and a long, meandering plot that - much like the Mississippi river - contains many twists and turns that unnecessarily delay your arrival, ultimately dumping you out somewhere you didn't want to be anyway (Louisiana)

Slow pace, nothing happening, I don’t care about steamboats, and I’m sick of hearing the n-word
