Hands down the best book I've read in a long time. Each character is clearcut and Marsh is a character that you can't help but root for. Sour Billy is so evil that it makes the book thrilling and you can't help but adore Marsh's devotion to his boat, like a lover, even when times get hard. The epilougue is short, sweet and beautiful. One of the best books i've ever read.

Lots of boat talk. Gets good towards the end.

i don't know what you're expecting from a George R. R. Martin book written in 1982, but expect liberal use of the N-word, and a long, meandering plot that - much like the Mississippi river - contains many twists and turns that unnecessarily delay your arrival, ultimately dumping you out somewhere you didn't want to be anyway (Louisiana)

Starts off quite slow but gets more interesting as you get further into the story, especially once Abner and Joshua have been on the boat for a few weeks. Sometimes the descriptions of the different elements of the ships get lengthy. The ending felt weirdly rushed. Still, Martin's take on vampires is very original and interesting, and I loved the dark tone of the book.

An amazing vampire book with some stumbles in world building and/or character development.
