Good book, but the movie looks different.

Yeah, it’s a mess, but it’s funny. Chock full of the kind of bad decisions we all made as teenagers.

I read this from cover to cover in two hours. It was light and fluffy and typical and lovely and I can't wait to see the movie. Mae Whitman will be the PERFECT Bianca.

I liked this book. But in my opinion the movie was better. The movie seemed to have more detail about Bianca and Wesley’s relationship. 3 stars, because the book was Okay. I think it could’ve been better or maybe i should’ve read the book first and then watch the movie.

All right, I have to be honest – I was not a huge fan of this book at all. After hearing so many great reviews about The Duff, I thought I would enjoy it as well. Turns out, that was not the case…

I consider myself to be a fairly cynical, sarcastic person at times, but Bianca was just too much for me. I couldn’t connect with her at all because she was just so negative and unlikable. Wesley was terrible, and I couldn’t stand him right from the start. And the swearing…anyone who knows me personally knows that I have a bit of a potty mouth, but it really irked me to see so many F bombs in the book.

There are two positive things I did like about this book. One was the relationship between Bianca and her two best friends, Casey and Jessica. They were there for Bianca even when she was acting terrible. The other positive was that the actual topic of being The Duff is something every girl can relate to at some point in their lives.

I was disappointed I didn’t enjoy this book more but would still recommend it to people solely on the fact that it touches on a topic girls are sadly all too familiar with. Kudos as well to the author for publishing a book at such a young age!

The slut shaming in this book! Movie was way better.

Honestly, for the most part I hated this book. I do have to admit though that the ending was pretty nice and sweet. That's like the only thing that saved this review slightly.

The fmc, Bianca, absolutely sucked. Like honestly. She is so unlikeable in my eyes. She did redeem herself a bit at the end at least but that doesn't change the fact that she was absolutely infuriating for the most part. She is one of those "I'm not like to other girls" kind of protagonists and I think that already says enough. (I did forgive this a little bit because this book is from 2010 so yeah.) Her cynical mindset might be amusing at first but it sure does get annoying very fast. Not to forget about her hypocrisy and the way she treats her best friends and the other people around her. I'll leave it at that, she sucks.

I also have to add, the amount of times I had to read the words "man whore", "slut" and "whore" really made me want to scream.

the realist in me didn't want to like this book, but the romantic in me thoroughly enjoyed it. I did think the characters were a bit far fetched. Bianca was astoundingly well adjusted for a kid whose home life was so messy. she may not always have made the best decisions, but she showed a self knowledge and awareness of her own worth that many people don't learn until well into their 20's or later. Casey and jess, also, seemed almost too good to be true as friends. they got angry when they were mistreated, but they were never catty, and they never ganged up on Bianca. as a former teenage girl myself, Bianca's friends are the exceptions, not the rule.

all that being said, I really liked it. I liked Bianca's snarky attitude, pessimism and all. I liked how the characters vividly jumped off the page. would reread. would recommend.

3.5 stars. I liked this one. It wasn't high literature, but I found it an interesting read that I didn't want to put down. I found the situations to be a bit more realistic (if a bit convenient) that some YA, although the language bothered me at times. I think that's probably mostly due to the age of the author at the time of release, and I imagine she'll get better with time (because 19 is not too shabby to be a published author!).
