this book had my smiling and giggling like an idiot i loved it sm it’s pure serotonin

This book has just reaffirmed my love for soft bois and strong ass friendships. Absolutely loved it!

More like a 3.5..... Really solid young adult contemporary that employs a lot of YA tropes! The Midsummer Night's Dream retelling and musical part of the book tapped into my inner theater kid in a great way. The romances were cute, the family dynamics were great, and the friendships were really heartwarming to read about. It definitely has a lot of flaws and is somewhat predictable, bit a cute and enjoyable read regardless. The "message" of the story was kind of eye-rolly for me, and the character archetypes, while true to Shakespeare, get on my nerves when its just high schoolers being stereotypically their high school stereotype.

FOOLISH HEARTS by Emma Mills is a book I picked up in a bulk discount book order ages ago and just never got around to reading. While perusing my shelves for a recent Valentines themed team readathon it caught my eye as it would meet a few of the prompts.

FOOLISH HEARTS follows Claudia, a teen who stumbles into overhearing the breakup of the school’s “it couple”, Paige and Iris and it is super awkward. Getting forced into working with Iris on the school’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is sure to be just as painful. With the residual awkwardness between Paige and Iris and a budding new romance of her own, Claudia is learning to make new friends, discover new boy bands and expand her world in general.

This was overall a quick and fun read. It isn’t one that overly blew me away, but that’s more than okay. I enjoyed the focus on developing friendships just as much as the developing romances. As a fan of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I enjoyed seeing bits of it sprinkled into the story as well. It isn’t a book that will necessarily stick with me long term, but it was definitely worth the read!

This was a perfect pick for Valentine’s week even as someone who doesn’t especially read a lot of romances. And yes, I do realize it is now a full month after Valentine’s Day by the time this is posting, so I definitely have some catching up to do!

SO GOOD. i love all the characters so much. especially claudia wallace and iris huang, they're amazing.
i'm going to go cry over this book later and it's just like radio silence by alice oseman where it's like, you can't help but love all the characters.

What do you get when you add solid friendships, a sweet romance and a few chuckles?

Claudia and Iris?
Perfection. Loved them both, especially Iris.
Claudia and Gideon?
Is it weird to not be in love with the love interest, but be rooting hard for the two characters to get together? Although, I must say, he grew on me as the story carried on...
This book kind of reminded me of the movie The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Seinfeld. This was the perfect light read to curl up to on a chilly evening.
Also, can we talk about how [a: Emma Mills|5822460|Emma Mills|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1456420235p2/5822460.jpg] is blessed with beautiful book covers?

This book surprised me.

I thought I'd predicted how this book was going to turn out. I saw myself rating it two stars and then never picking up any of Emma's books again. The reason I believed this was because a) the synopsis doesn't do the book justice, and b) I had read Emma's First and Then way back in 2015 and was incredibly unimpressed by it. Still, I couldn't judge this book without having read it, and I picked this book up out of mild curiosity.

I absolutely adored it.

This book was just one of those ones where you could read it at a time you weren't really doing anything and just fly through it. In my case, I read this when I was traveling with family for the holidays. I thought everything about this book was undeniably adorable. I loved Claudia, the protagonist, and all of the others as well. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't annoyed with her a few times, though. She was *always* acting as if no one actually cared about her, despite the fact that she was surrounded by awesome family and friends. The justification behind this was some guy had told her freshman year that he only felt "regular" about her, and due to this she kept saying "I'm just the person you feel regular about." I found this irritating-like, that's his opinion? But just because one person said it, doesn't automatically make it true. Despite all this, though, I REALLY liked this book (if I hadn't emphasized that enough already)!

I loved the awesome friendship and family dynamics that were in this book, as it seems it's becoming a trope recently in YA to make families that are "imperfect" (abuse, divorce, missing parent" etc). Don't get me wrong, those issues are important and NEED to be talked about; however, it's refreshing to have a story every once in a while with loving parents and siblings (that Claudia was actually really close to). This book was also pure escapism, as it's one of those ones you can just get lost in and forget about what's going on in the real world. It's one of those ones where, although it remains heartfelt, doesn't have tons of issues it's trying to address and instead is just purely for fun!

Would recommend :)

A sweet, nerdy, and quirky YA read. It's hard not to fall in love with the secondary characters but it is a little difficult to fall in love with our main character.

4.5 stars.

This is by far my favorite Emma Mills book yet! I was caught up in the story from the very beginning!

This book is such a great book about friendship, love and finding who you are. I loved Claudia from the minute I met her. She’s snarky and really fun. I as immediately intrigued by her relationship with Iris. Iris, is someone who I loved so much in this book. To see her character grow so much was really wonderful to see. It really made me so happy! She was so closed off but hilarious. She starts off really mean but it was amazing to see her grow into a character that became one of my favorites.

Really… all the characters in this book were amazing. I have love the way that Emma Mills comes to writing friendships. It’s one of the things that I have loved in all the books I have read by her, recently. They are all going through a lot but they come together. The friendships are intense but feel so very real.

This book was so full of fun, humor, and love. At the same time, it is quite emotional but in the best way. If you ever want to pick up a book by Emma Mills, please pick this one up! It’s such a great story that you will fall in love with!
