I was really concerned going into this one that I wouldn't like it simply because of how hyped it has been. I thought this one was great. It felt so real and everyone felt so well developed. Gideon is my flower child and I will protect him at all costs. I also really liked Iris because she was so real and so flawed. Just a really good contemporary.
2.5 stars
I wanted to like this a lot more than I ended up liking it. It definitely redeemed itself by the end, but for much of the book I wasn’t feeling it.
I really didn’t like Claudia. At all. She was kind of snotty to Gideon for no reason. She was also kind of oblivious and all kinds of angsty and really insecure.
Most of the characters annoyed me when they were first introduced, but I grew to like them (except Claudia who I never really warmed to). Gideon annoyed me, but I ended up liking him after learning more about him, and I really liked his friendship with Noah. I felt bad for Iris, but it seemed like she was her own worst enemy, pushing people away with unkind comments and unfair judgments. I liked that Claudia helped her with that.
For some reason, I thought the play would have a lot more to do with the story than it did. It was kind of an afterthought.

THE WORLD IS A COLD, CRUEL PLACE AND THIS BOOK IS THE WARM BLANKET I WILL WRAP MYSELF IN
This book. was. aDoRAblE.
Extremely likeable yet completely realistic mc, great side relationships with her siblings and best friend, adorable romance (I am so frickin in love with Gideon Prewitt jkasfhbfshdblksabf) and Iris. IRIS!! their friendship was to die for.
I'd say this is the kinda book where there's a main character who's perfectly satisfied with her life until one event shakes things up and she realizes that she's not really been living and a few issues come her way but she comes out the other side with a better sense of herself, the people she cares about and what she wants in life. When I put it like this,, sure it's a cliché teenage story but this was fun, well written, interesting, with really good characters and overall pretty much perfect, as long as this is what you're looking for.
Other things i loved were: god tier humor,, w/w rep,, unapologetically loving male frndship,, realistic boy band obsessions (!!)
Now I say *pretty much* perfect because:
(spoilers!!!!!)
for one, the book ended with Gideon and Claudia at the ~like~ stage and that just doesn't fucking sit right with me. You made me read a whole book, fall in love with both the characters and their dynamic all for them to just like each other?? nOpe I wasn't satisfied :(
Secondly, I could've done with less talk about the play tbh but like. idk. it's possible I just wasn't prepared for it to be so highschool-y so I was caught off guard and felt it was unnecessary, but if you get into this book with the right expectations I think it would be fine.

This book was actually a lot of fun! I loved the friendship dynamics so muchhh
If anyone knows me, they know that one of my comfort movies is Edge of Seventeen, and Foolish Hearts delivered the same level of feeling and warmth that that movie brings me. It is so rare when high schoolers in books actually feel like they're plucked from real life, and Emma Mills delivered on that. I seriously love them like my own children.
This book is definitely a slow and light read, and you're just going through the motions while following Claudia through her life. It isn't that there are intense struggles or high stakes throughout the book, it's simply a normal high schooler navigating through a semester, but I absolutely adored it. It is witty and full of life, and every single character from Gideon to Iris are so real and lovable. Their relationships and the developments are so natural. Because of how seemingly mundane the events are, the characters shine their brightest.
Definitely character driven and slower-paced, but refreshing all the same. New comfort book for me, personally.

I received this in an OwlCrate subscription box. Foolish Hearts is a great young adult novel with a diverse set of characters and unique plot. This is the kind of book I would have absolutely loved to read when I was 16. I still enjoy young adult novels but typically prefer a historical or fantasy element to it. All in all I'd recommend this to pretty much anyone who enjoys young adult novels.
Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills is a beautiful young adult romance novel. When Claudia Wallace accidentally overhears a private breakup conversation between 2 fellow classmates, she had no idea the journey she was about to embark on. Later, Claudia is partnered with one of the girls to write a paper together. The teacher is less than pleased and makes the girls audition for the school play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. As she works on the play, her world of friends and experiences grow.
Claudia is simply the most realistic girl I have ever read about. She attends a prestigious all girl school, not because her family is rich, but because her father is a teacher there. I have yet to met someone who isn't attending a school on scholarship or without any financial aid. She isn't popular but she isn't an outcast either. At the beginning of the story, she simply existed. As the story progresses, we see her make friends with other girls, who are rich, as well as a couple of boys from the neighboring all boy school. Claudia is a normal teenager, who has a best friend, does about average in school, plays video games, and has an obsession with a boy band. Claudia also has insecurities and those insecurities make it very, very easy to connect with her.
Claudia's relationship with her parents as well as her siblings made me envious as I did not and do not have that closeness. I also do not have the closeness of a best friend like Claudia does with Zoe and later with Iris. Her friendship with Gideon and Noah, however, reminds me of my relationship with my husband and a close male friend of ours. Again I was able to connect with the story through them. Gideon is quite simply put a brilliant character created by Mills.
I definitely rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, because holy cow it was amazing. I laughed and I cried. I sympathized and I really wanted to play Battle Quest. I already loved A Midsummer Night's Dream, but I think I will go back and re-read it based off of the synopses I learned from Claudia. Strongly encourage anyone, especially teenage females, who love literature, gaming, and have insecurities concerning friends, family, or boyfriends to read this book.
