Initial thoughts:

I liked Foolish Hearts because it was light, fun and easy to follow. However, it was just one of those run-of-the-mill contemporary YA books that are perfect if you just need a book to fill in the space between books.

Full review to come.

this was SO cute?? my new fav for the ultimate in adorable cheesy happiness. i want my own space prince

This was a very cute book. It had the “it” factor that didn’t let me put it down. The romance was very, there was good character development seen in few of the characters and it also had lgbt representation which was also really nice to see.

- This has been my favorite book from the YA Book Club so far! I may buy it so I can reread it in the future.
- The pacing of each storyline was great. There was a lot of points to tie up and it felt like everything thread got an ending and was done in a way that wasn't rushed or thrown away.
- I could definitely relate to the drama between Claudia, Zoe, and Alex. Having a twin brother who dated (and eventually married) one of my best friends and to have found out by surprise, this storyline hit close to home. I was honestly just impressed that they got through it so quickly. It is a really weird transition and hard to navigate without hurt feelings.
- I really enjoyed the dialogue in this book. It felt very realistic. The joking around, the expletives, etc. A lot of YA books struggle with feeling like it is actually teens talking and I wasn't pulled out of this much with thoughts of "would a teen really say that?"
- A Midsummer Night's Dream was a great play choice, because it mirrored all the moving relationship pieces going on in the book's plot.
- Gideon really made my heart flutter. A lot. I haven't had a YA book crush in a long time, so this is high praise.
- It's super cute that Gideon got into her online role playing game. That's such a move when someone has a crush to start doing the thing their crush likes.
- It's also SO CUTE that Gideon's family know that he has a giant crush on Claudia and do not even try to hide it!!
- Claudia and Iris's friendship was fun to see grow. I liked the device of them both getting obsessed with the same boy band. And I could relate to continuously calling the radio station for concert tickets because I have done that for a Sara Bareilles concert (and I got them!).
- I really liked that Claudia wasn't cast as the lead in the play with Gideon. I think that would have been the more obvious place to stage things, but having her on the costume team felt more authentic/unique. It was fun to see a character assess that they weren't going to do well as an actor and then have that be true. A lot of authors would have had it be a big reveal that actually, the main character has a secret acting talent that was waiting to be unearthed! Instead she brings her sewing skills and her understanding of the text to help out the production, which is equally as important.
- Claudia's dilemma of "I was in a relationship where I had feelings but it turns out that the guy didn't and that really threw me because I couldn't even tell" actually makes sense as a hang-up someone would develop in real life!! So many times in books it's just a random insecurity or an unfounded fear that the protagonist is unlovable that messes with the main love story. Claudia's insecurity felt relatable and actually makes sense. That boyfriend doesn't mean no one will ever love her back (of course) but it would definitely fuck with someone trusting themselves to know where they stand in a relationship. And that experience would make you more prone to protect yourself from that happening again. Gideon says "But with you - when I'm with you, I can just ... exist. You know what I mean?" And he means they have good chemistry/vibe so it's easy. And she hears "I'm the kind of person you feel regular with." That's an actual understandable mis-hearing of the same message. Which was such a good idea.

I really really needed to read something like this right now.
I love warm stories like this one, I really do.
The world has been really scary right now and so this was a really nice distraction.
I highly recommend it!

Cute.
