This book made me so freaking happy

This was really really cute.

I loved this book! Funny, heartfelt, and honest. Great characters, great humor (actual laugh out loud funny!), great story, just great all around.

Cover: 5/5

Story: 5/5

Mills has now become a new auto-buy author for me. Her books have the same female protagonist: sassy, funny, smart, but has some self-image issues. A little dense when it comes to romantic relationships. They also have the same male love interests: sweet, a little dorky, problems communicating how much they like the female lead. She also has fantastic side characters with their own stuff going on, but not too much that it takes away from the main story. Family dynamics that are realistic, yet still portray siblings who love each other. Good friends. Healthy female friendships. Her formula for her books is my jam and I officially love her.

This was another good one. I love how Claudia got to know Iris (who isn't a nice person) and accepts her even though she can be a bitch. Claudia herself was great. Funny and unapologetic for who she is. I find her so relatable (as well as Mills' other female leads) mostly because she uses humor a lot in her daily life, including as a defense mechanism, and I do that myself. It's interesting to see a lot of myself in a character, especially since I'm a woman in my 40's reading about a high school girl. haha The play aspect of the plot was fun. I liked the mention of the boy band that was also in her previous book. I don't even know if it's a real band or a fictional one, but I like the obsession with them. The video game playing was a bit boring for me. I actually play video games myself, but not really that type of game and I don't know that I enjoy reading that much detail about other people playing video games. But overall, this was another win for me.

What a lovely YA story. I love the beautiful cover too.

I enjoyed this book!!

"You have a best friend and siblings who love you [...] and I, I give a shit about you, too, you know. We all do. And so to say that... it's like you're saying we're wrong. Do you think we're all wrong? All of us? To care about you like that? To... value you, the way we do?"

i feel like i'm betraying myself whenever i'm endeared by straightboy love interests but gideon is a Good Lad. big dick gansey iii energy

i didn’t love emma mills’ other books, but they were charming and sweet and generally a good way to relax.

this one, though? i really genuinely liked it — every character felt like they were given their due, and the plot didn’t seem like a foregone conclusion. i loved the inclusion of fandom (in two very different areas, too!) i loved that every character got to show their vulnerabilities and just...this has automatically become my fave of her books

I liked the writing style, I also liked the characters... but maybe I didn't like them enough for the story to be as character driven as it was. And I wanted way more romance. There was virtually none. The story was more about friendship and the protagonist, Claudia, working through some self-esteem/ get out of your comfort zone issues she had. If I'm completely honest, a lot of her personality flaws weren't considered until the last portion of the book, which kinda threw me off...like they were just thrown in there - some of it seemed like unnecessary obstacles for her relationship with Gideon.

Did anything even really happen in this book? I'm having a hard time with that. Everything quickly wrapped up in like the last 15 pages and the build-up to the conclusion was too long in my opinion.

This was basically a bunch of everyday life things that turned into a story. It just didn't click with me. I've in enjoyed this type of day to day story/ slice of life story before like in To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han but this just wasn't my fave. I didn't love all the details about the game they played in the book (it was kind of excessive). I also didn't care for all the Shakespeare (and I was a theater kid so I thought I'd connect with that part of the story more) but I do like Mills' writing so maybe I'll give something else by her a try. I'm just disappointed because I truly thought I'd love this. And it was just kinda okay.

This was so adorable! I loved every single character so much and there were some awesome dynamics between family members and friends. Also, there was pretty much no girl hate and rivalry in love ! I recommend it to anyone who is in need of a super fluffy story!
