THIS BOOK MAN ok so the writing was a little stilted in the beginning (I do think this was likely due to me starting w the audiobook, I didn't care for the narrators style) but once the intrigue kicked off? Incredible. I love portal fantasy and this was just so fucking good for that. The dead passages made me wiggle in joy. Also Rat! (In a Hilarious Move this book is the first I've read to actually reflect my real life relationship, aka afab enby in relationship w trans boy) (Love that for me)

I really wanted to finish, because I really liked the idea and the representation. However, I found that the exposition was getting repetitive in its allusions to the mystery, rather than adding further clues or just revealing what was going on.

I enjoyed my reading experience of A Hundred Vicious Turns. A Hundred Vicious Turns is a fantasy dark academia novel with mysterious plotlines. The main aspects that this story focuses on are characterization and the magic system. The magic system is detailed. A Hundred Vicious Turns was a character driven story with slower to medium pacing. There was a was a content guide provided at the beginning of the story. The main character Rat had some relatable qualities. The cast was diverse. Overall, I felt A Hundred Vicious Turns was well written, and I could see myself continuing the series when the next installment releases.

Thank you so much to the author, Lee Paige O’Brian, for reaching out and sending me a copy of A Hundred Vicious Turns! ☺️🫶

This book was already on my TBR when I saw the author emailed me about it, so I was super excited! I ended up picking this up as an audiobook to listen to as I tend to enjoy fantasy more that way and I’m so glad I did as I loved the narrator of the book! I’m obsessed with the fact our MC’s name is Rat! Like what a cool name! And I think it just fits them so well - Rat Evans. I loved the magic system in this world as it's unique to the individual. Rat’s magic allows them to find doors to transport them to other places. It's a really cool concept and it has gotten them into trouble in the past. It sorta ended on a bit of a cliffhanger so I'm excited to see where the story goes and to see the relationship between Rat and Harker grow. 😊
.
Overall, I can see this book being compared to the Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell as a Simon stan, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for book 2. It definitely has a lot of similar vibes. I’d also compare it to The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White and Of Feathers and Thorns by Kit Vincent.
.
I ended up rating this 4.5 stars just because I was in a reading slump (during the time I was reading) and I definitely don't think a fantasy was a perfect read for me at the time. But I still had a really fun time with this and will probably be rereading it before book 2. 🥰

A Hundred Vicious Turns, by Lee Paige O’Brian is out now! Definitely check it out if you're looking for more queer and trans magical fantasy books.

This is a DNF at 14% will pick it up again in digital because think the story will be interesting, but cannot handle the narrator's choppy sentences.

I liked this book. I liked the characters and the world. But it felt like a sequel and not the first in a series.

When so much of the plot is depended on the events of the previous year how that information is shared in the book has to be handled well. I think it was a little clunky. I literally googled if it was a sequel and I had missed something.
