Frankly, I've never experienced such poor world-building, character building, and story building all in one sweep. Not sure if I'll finish but if I do it's because I don't want to waste an audible credit. When I started, I thought that as the story developed it would get better but if anything it's gotten worse and worse.
and arguably- the best character is hardly in it and dies in the end. RIP LUCAS!

Look I’m just not the target audience. There is some political intrigue but the romance subplots were of no interest to me. Also the writing style isn’t what I’m personally looking for. Maybe if I was younger.

I started reading this book based on a recommendation from a friend whose judgement about books I trust implicitly. Then I realized I was reading the wrong book and all I could say was, “THANK GOD!” I was on Chapter 14 wondering when the hell it was going to get better (the only direction it could go was up) when I checked the text I’d sent my pal about the book and discovered my mistake. She was recommending Mark Lawrence’s Red Queen’s War series and not the Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.

I read this a few years ago not realizing that it was a series so I wanted to read it again. I liked it. Not my favorite series but I liked it. I’m hoping I like the rest of the series.
