I picked up and put down this book for literally three years, but last week it FINALLY gripped me properly and I finished it within days. Is it the best sci fi book ever written? Most definitely not. But I see the hype and am happy to have read it.

Like many, I read dune after watching the movies, craving the amazing world that was on display on the big screen. The book definitely added another level of immersion, reading through it and referring to the appendix everytime a new word came up, I felt like this world had such a rich and believable history.
My main dislike of the book (which was mostly absent from the movies) was it's dated views of gender. It was quite jarring seeing the strong-willed Chani from the movies reduced to a subdued and passive role in the books, and as such she felt like an extension of Paul's character, rather than a character herself. The same can be said about the rest of the female Fremen. Whilst I understand that this story was a product of its time, I can't help but dislike the gender essentialism presented in this story.
That being said, for what it was worth I loved existing in this world again, and was incredibly excited to see it expanded by Messiah.
