I grew up watching the classic Sullivan production. Summers with the back screen door open, making strawberry jam, dramatically reading poetry and seeing myself in the fiery smart Anne. Now, after reading the book, I realize that Anne is a far lighter spirit than her famous portrayal! She's very well-loved, stylish, accomplished, with a good heart that feels deeply. She's not always full of temper and acting out-- she's just passionate, and is a child navigating a very difficult world for most of the story. Diana also isn't denied an education in the way the show portrays, or is that worried by Aunt Josephine. Gilbert is very clearly devoted to Anne early on, and Marilla doesn't chastise her for spending time with him. There's so much difference, really: even the dress with puffed sleeves is facilitated by Rachel, and isn't a ridiculous vanity but a fashion trend Anne wants to fulfill just like all the other girls. It's interesting how the Sullivan production, to me, gives Anne this defiant energy, like she's always having to prove herself and put people off of criticizing her, when really the community was much, much kinder to her. But I suppose being more conflict-driven is how you make a compelling show, where the book can have more of a warmth to it.

If there's something to reflect on: I'd ask the reader to ask themselves where any people of color are. Anne of Green Gables is still very special to me, but the show Anne with an E did bring me to some big realizations about Avonlea.

Pasé la última media hora llorando mientras terminaba el libro. Me hace feliz que existan personajes como este. Hace años que lo tengo guardado —desde que vi la serie—, pero no fué hasta ayer que le eché una hojeada. Luego no pude parar.

Una niña muy diferente navega un mundo no hecho a su medida. Me gusta tanto que a pesar del esperado cambio que tuvo Ana mientras crecía, jamás dejó de ser la misma. Soñadora, imaginativa, con muchas ideas, sueños y ambiciones. Pero con límites.

A veces siento que mi niña interior fué Ana, pero una a la que devolvieron al orfanato. Leer esto fué triste a veces, pero muy muy pocas. Lo disfruté bastante.
