This isn't a bad book but I've read many of his other books and they all kind of blur together.

Having read another of John Douglas’ books, I’m familiar with his writing style - detailed, clinical approaches with a dash of egotism. Some like it, some don’t - I happen to like it! In my opinion, he’s allowed to be a bit narcissistic because he’s one of the best, and the evidence for that is laid out in this book. I found it so fascinating to read his process for getting killers to open up and discuss their history, methods, and motivations. A great book for my true crime fix!

I highly recommend listening to this on audiobook!! Jonathan Groff is the narrator - he played the character based on Douglas in Mindhunter, and I could listen to him read anything!

If you enjoy true crime, this is about as straightforward and honest as it gets. Douglas does not glorify the events or the killer, or make them seem larger than life or untouchable, but rather he talks about the history (before, after, and during the crime) as a way to understand why they did what they did. It's a deep dive into what makes someone deviate from the norm, and do things that most of the population does not understand and would never contemplate doing.

4.5/5; really really well done, not too clinical and not overly dramatic. Author’s personal views are not overemphasized despite his position of “authority” to comment on criminal justice. Audiobook expertly narrated.
