I’ve marked five stars because to be honest I didn’t see that one coming. However for some reason it took me a while to get going and I could only read a couple of pages at a time before I got bored.
A great story though in the end. A proper who dunnit!

back on my bullshit

A solid 3 1/2 stars. This read like a very contained, somewhat detached but oh how rewarding fish out of water detective sent to a foreign land to solve a very intimate murder in a very close community. The last chapter is a masterpiece of the anti reenactment trope. Maigret pulls an anti Poirot and the reader who has read Christie can't help itself to compare, contrast and enjoy both.

Too bogged down in notions of how France sees Holland and vice versa. Hedonism and repression, willingness to confront the truth, etc. all wrapped around the murder of a not so likable lech by one of any number of not interesting enough cast members. I will say the last page made me laugh twice but otherwise... not so enjoyable.

Not the strongest in plot but very vivid in characterisation. Simenon can be brutal with his images of people! A quick read, looking forward to the next in the series.
