Interesting and witty. I enjoyed how this book was written like a dinner party. I loved the Kinky Histoey TikToks, so I had to check this one out!

This was an incredibly informative read about the history of how societies have perceived sexuality, the laws around it, how it’s depicted in the media for better and worse, and all sorts of enlightening statistics. The book takes into account a variety of perspectives and gives much-needed attention to groups often left out of studies and discussions around these topics.

I felt the author was incredibly respectful in how she approached various topics and communities. In addition to historical examples and stories, she also gives all sorts of anecdotes from her own life and those she knows or has met that range from hilarious to heartbreaking.

Education in general is so important, especially around these issues. I feel this book is a must-read for everyone, though I know the people who would most benefit from reading it may be hesitant to pick it up. If you’re on the fence, I highly recommend checking it out!

The audiobook is narrated by the author. She does an amazing job! I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

This book was absolutely enchanting ! I have never had so much fun learning so much in my entire life! It was amazing getting to know new Kinky facts and being able to understand more history on the topic! I highly recommend everyone read this!

Kinky History is pretty self-explanatory. It's a nonfiction book about the history of the different aspects of human sexuality.
I was entirely unfamiliar with Esmé Louise James's platform of sexuality education (she started her Kinky History series on TikTok during Covid) so I went into this book completely blind.
This was a really fascinating read. The author delves into famous historical figures (Mozart, Gertrude Stein, and several others) and their sexualities, which I found very interesting. What I most enjoyed was her emphasis on how this information should be used to humanize these figures and connect to them.
I loved the structure of the book, where the reader is attending a fictionalized dinner party with the author and the aforementioned historical figures. It adds an element of character and fantasy that you don't usually see in nonfiction.
The author also has a wonderful section on queer identity and history. She delves into asexuality and the history of bisexuality. She also talks about several historically queer figures, some of whom I knew about and some who I didn't.
All in all, this was a fun read, but I would only recommend it if you're okay with reading about some blatant (and sometimes weird) sexual content.

CW: SEXUAL CONTENT (nothing is super graphic, but there is erotic art in the book, and there are some letter excerpts that get a little erotic); queerphobia; sexism; excrement (in the kink sense)
