I really enjoyed the framing of the book as a dinner party. I've listened to the Kinky History podcast, and I enjoyed Esme's expressive voice shining through in the audiobook as well. A lot of the information in the book was very similar to the podcast, but there was also plenty of new info to learn.

DID NOT FINISH

july 2024: i'll try again another time. not in a nonfiction mood
june 2025: kept trying again but seriously not for me. i don't vibe with the writing style and don't feel like i'm absorbing any of these facts and details. maybe tiktok is a good format for the way this is constructed, but a book of this length is pretty tiresome.

This reads like a really long tik tok which is very jarring to read. The dinner table motif had potential but was super awkward and reading a sexual history book with constant immature euphemisms for sex didn’t go well with me. A lot of generalisations seem to be made about one statistical data and the author supported the idea that men are more likely to participate in non-monogomy citing one ted talk? I am glad queerness was included and is integral to to discussion it felt lacking in nuance with social media slang every five seconds…
I did enjoy reading about kinky history but I think we can do better.
