Loved the inspiring story of her determination to become an Olympian, but also really enjoyed her entire backstory and how she improved her mental health.

My thoughts are so different on this from essay to essay. I did love Alexi Pappas's big sister voice and found some of her advice and experiences resonated with me, but some of it felt a little too preachy for my liking. I also take issue with people who aren't trained in psychology talking about their own experiences as if they're the standard or only path — I really don't think Pappas intended to do this, but a lot of my own biases/triggers were set off here. I think readers who are into athletics and know Pappas will find this more enjoyable than I did, so the issues I had are likely just my view.

A violently raw memoir about perseverance and committing to your goals, whether that’s qualifying for the Olympics, writing a movie, or staying alive another day.

Loved some parts and lost interest in other parts. I enjoyed the storytelling but couldn’t handle all the shouting on what you SHOULD be doing.

Reading 2021
Book 11: Bravey by Alexi Pappas
Listened to this book, after I saw it in Real Simple magazine this past month.

Alexi is a former Olympic runner. Her journey to the Olympics was filled with hurdles in life. The biggest was her mother committing suicide when Pappas was 4 years old. the course of her life takes a much different trajectory. She was raised by her dad along with her older brother. After the Olympics, Alexi experiences her own mental health crisis and must battle her way back from the brink of suicide.

So sounds like a happy book? In the end, it is in part a self help book, part inspirational Olympic story, and part how to love your self for who you are. Her honest memoir about life was hard to listen to in parts, and parts seemed a bit too preachy for me. My rating 3.5 ⭐.

Great book. Really inspiring.

Interesting story. A great read on grit, perseverance, and determination.

Also learned a lot about depression and what depression feels like, and what depression is - both things I didn't know.
