This was very excellent! Some of my favorites include “Equality”, “These Yet to be United States”, “Born That Way”, and *the grand thesis & namesake of the book* “Our Grandmothers”

... She gathered her babies,
their tears slick as oil on black faces,
their young eyes canvassing mornings of madness.
Momma, is Master going to sell you from us tomorrow?

Yes.
Unless you keep walking more and talking less.
Yes.
Unless the keeper of our lives releases me from all commandments.
Yes.
And your lives,
never mine to live,
will be executed upon the killing floor of innocents.
Unless you match my heart and words,
saying with me,

I shall not be moved...

Este poema fue mi favorito, fue realmente conmovedor y creo que pudo tocar cada fibra de mi ser. Es un buen libro aunque me ha costado bastante conectar con algunos poemas, pero tiene una muy buena prosa y la historia que cuenta es importante.

Angelou crawled under my skin to stay when I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings at age 15. I Shall Not Be Moved is a reminder of why she deserves that place. Aneglou holds back nothing, pushing forward against racism, sexism, and the burden of a history that must be confronted with words that are both sharp and seductive. Angelou's art is something that will- for me- always remain unmatched.

Maya Angelou's I Shall Not Be Moved is a striking book, surely as fresh and as relevant today as it was upon publication in 1990. It honors, interrogates, and celebrates in equal measure.
emotional hopeful

Old Folk's Laughter really just summed up something that I've been trying to put into words for a while. Probably one of my favorite poems I've ever read.

Absolutely incredible.

Wow, some really powerful and important stuff in here

Maya Angelou is an incredible poet, and this collection is a prime example of her work in poetry. My favourite will always be And Still I Rise, but this was still an excellent read. My favourite poems in the collection were Worker's Song, Human Family, Equality, Forgive, Our Grandmothers, and Preacher Don't Send Me.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed Maya Angelou's other work as well as to anyone who enjoys poetry.

I challenge anyone to find a more well-rounded poet than Maya Angelou. In this short collection alone, she displays a great ability to shift between styles and themes.

The poems here are both emotive and playful, thoughtful and fun.

My personal favorites:

Listening winds
overhear my privacies
spoken aloud (in your
absence, but for your sake).

When you, mustachioed,
nutmeg-brown lotus,
sit beside the Oberlin shoji.

My thoughts are particular:
of your light lips and hungry
hands writing Tai Chi urgencies
into my body. I leap, float,
run

to spring cool springs into
your embrace. Then we match grace.
This girl, neither feather nor
fan, drifted and tossed.

Oh, but then I had power.
Power.

A certain person wondered why
a big strong girl like me
wouldn’t keep a job
which paid a normal salary.
I took my time to lead her
and to read her every page.
Even minimal people
can’t survive on minimal wage.

A certain person wondered why
I wait all week for you.
I didn’t have the words
to describe just what you do.
I said you had the motion
of the ocean in your walk,
and when you solve my riddles
you don’t even have to talk.
