they’re getting better

This book—a thrilling, hair-raising tale (pun intended) that could've been the greatest mystery of the century… if only the "red-headed" part wasn’t so entirely irrelevant.

description

In this classic Sherlock Holmes short story, Mr. Wilson, a man who seemingly struck gold with a too-good-to-be-true job opportunity, ends up caught in a web of bizarre and unnecessary qualifications. Like, who thought it would be a great idea to hire someone just because they had red hair? And then the job was basically “recopying the encyclopedia”—which, okay, sounds like an absolute dream if your life goal is to completely check out of the real world.

Anyway, Mr. Wilson’s new job evaporates as mysteriously as it appeared, and naturally, Holmes takes the case, because of course he does. He’s Sherlock Holmes. The greatest detective in the world. (Reminder: he solves the case by noticing things. It’s what he does.)

The plot? A bit...underwhelming. It's one of those mysteries where, as the reader, you sort of feel like you're just waiting for Holmes to solve it, because, well, you know he's going to. The clues are there, but honestly, they’re kind of mundane. I mean, red hair? A mysterious job? A criminal mastermind hiding in plain sight? Yes, it’s clever, but it’s also like watching a magician reveal his trick in the middle of the performance. "Oh, you were hiding behind the curtain the whole time? Shocking."

The best part? Sherlock's deductive genius. Because, truly, no one does knowing quite like him. You just have to let Holmes do his thing, which is precisely what he does. No need for a lot of action, just pure observation skills. It's like a detective's TED talk, but without the slides.

This book is a decent little mystery, though the "red-head" part feels like it could've been replaced with literally anything else (like, I don’t know, “The Left-Handed League” or “The People Who Like Sandwiches League”). If you’re looking for a deeply thrilling ride, you’ll find that Holmes’ powers of deduction are more entertaining than the actual mystery. But hey, it’s Sherlock Holmes. It’s not like he’s ever not going to win.

Doyle really said lemme think of the weirdest thing possible

Reading this book is like spotting some birds doing a weird mating dance.

adventurous mysterious

Not too great, and not the best story to follow "A Scandal in Bohemia". This reads more like a Hardy Boys novel, than a Sherlock Holmes book.
