My first Sherlock Holmes tale, and a great one to start with!

The most captivating thing about Holmes would be his powers of deduction and reasoning. It was super interesting to see how he figured out the case and analyzed people!

In the start we can see why sherlock is such a renowned detective as by taking just one look at the man, supposedly his client, he is able to deduce the man's past and present careers. The premise of the story is certainly intriguing but what I really despised was not being in on whatever sherlock was planning as I was completely oblivious, not unlike his dear friend watson who is the narrator. I personally feel like a mystery is interesting only when the protagonist is as clueless as the reader is, which adds a sense of dread and unease, exactly the elements stories like this are supposed to deliver. One of my pet peeves was Sherlock constantly denying Watson answers hence keeping him as well as the reader in suspense when he clearly knew everything. Out of context it might sound nice but here it just made the reader and watson himself feel unintelligent. The conclusion to the story was rather messy as two more characters, the policeman from Scotland yard and the banker, are introduced. It seems almost impossible how sherlock figured out the connection between two very distinct cases and I didn't even have time to come up with my own theories as to how everything will wrap up because the whole thing was so rushed.

I very enjoyable story. It doesn't weave together into a complex web like Agatha Christie, but man I'm entertained.

Once again disappointing. These stories are really not growing on me sadly.

An eccentric story which is told masterfully. This short story sees Doyle bring out his humorous side and in doing so, reveal more abou the character of Holmes and the mystery of the book. Another great entry to the series.
